RSNA said it implemented a number of green initiatives at its 98th annual conference in Chicago last week, in line with growing interest in sustainable meeting practices.
The society's initiatives included the following:
- Using more electronic documentation
- Using QR codes as an alternative to printed materials
- Offering apps and tools optimized for mobile use
- Printing on recycled paper with soy-based ink
- Offering recycling receptacles for paper, badges, lanyards, meeting bags, and programs
Green initiatives were also adopted by McCormick Place, as well as by Savor Catering Services, the meeting's official food services company, RSNA noted.
Green initiatives at McCormick Place at the RSNA 2011 show led to an environmental waste diversion rate of 64%, up 1% from 2010, and resulted in the diversion of more than 244 tons of material from landfills.
Conservation initiatives at that show saved 3,803 trees, 85,015 gallons of oil, 917,719 kilowatts of electricity, 733 yards of landfill space, and 1,566,073 gallons of water. In addition, Savor donated 2,100 lb of food to a Chicago-area food bank.
