Visitors to the technical exhibits of the 2000 edition of the Radiological Society of North America conference in Chicago will find an industry in the final throes of a major consolidation effort. The waning months of 2000 have seen several of radiology's long-time independent players succumb to the inevitable and agree to be acquired by larger competitors.
While a medical imaging market without its maverick firms will be a less colorful place, consolidation could be positive for the radiology community as a whole. Smaller firms will gain access to stronger distribution networks, with the end result being better access to cutting-edge technology for healthcare providers.
Rest assured, variety still reigns in medical imaging. The PACS market in particular has seen an explosion of new vendors, each of which hopes to bring a better digital mousetrap to market. Small companies will continue to provide much of the innovation found in medical imaging, even if that innovation eventually ends up under the label of a multimodality vendor.
While we're on the subject of innovation, the following pages will provide you with a comprehensive overview of new technologies to be introduced at this month's meeting. AuntMinnie's editorial team spent weeks interviewing dozens of vendors to get the advance scoop on new product introductions and cutting-edge work-in-progress developments.
