Dear AuntMinnie Member,
Cardiac imaging was once considered one of the toughest nuts to crack in the PACS industry. Dynamic cardiac images result in massive file sizes that can strain network bandwidth and storage capabilities.
But the advantages of cardiac digital image management are so considerable that they've prompted PACS vendors to overcome the technical limitations. As a result, providers of cardiac imaging services are finally throwing away their videotapes and cine film in favor of workstations and archives.
The trends are reported in a Technology Review article we're featuring this week in our Cardiac Imaging Digital Community by contributing writer Wayne Forrest. The article tracks how healthcare facilities are using cardiac PACS to operate more efficiently, such as by linking multiple facilities into a single network and making images available to multiple physicians simultaneously.
The story also discusses how facilities are linking their cardiology PACS with their radiology PACS -- a practice that is becoming more important as radiology-based modalities like CT and MRI extend their functionality into cardiac imaging.
