Verdict is in: Life's better in radiology

Radiology has its share of challenges, from inadequate reimbursement to turf encroachment from other specialties. But on the whole, radiologists have a more positive outlook than do physicians in other medical specialties.

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Radiology has its share of challenges, from inadequate reimbursement to turf encroachment from other specialties. But on the whole, radiologists have a more positive outlook than do physicians in other medical specialties.

That’s the verdict of a new article we’re featuring this week in our Imaging Center Digital Community. The story is based on a survey of healthcare providers in their 50s and 60s by healthcare recruiting firm Merritt, Hawkins & Associates of Irving, TX.

The survey found widespread dissatisfaction among older physicians, with more than half feeling disillusioned enough that they are planning to reduce the number of patients they see in the next one to three years, according to the survey. Such a development could have widespread ramifications, according to the story, as older physicians are the workhorses of medicine and other doctors will have to pick up the slack.

But the survey also found that the radiologists it queried gave less pessimistic responses to a variety of questions than other doctors. For example, 76% of medical imaging specialists would recommend a career in medicine to their children or young people, compared to just 36% of non-radiologists.

In other news, AuntMinnie.com will be on a reduced publishing schedule during the holidays -- you’ll be getting one Letter from the Editor this week and one the next, rather than the usual schedule of two a week. Our normal schedule will resume the week of January 5.

Happy holidays to all!
