Virtual Colonoscopy Radiology Insider

Dear AuntMinnie Insider,

Today's edition of the Virtual Colonoscopy Radiology Insider highlights a discussion by radiologist Dr. Judy Yee from the University of California San Francisco. The noted VC researcher touched on everything from conventional colonoscopy to CAD in a wide-ranging talk at the 2003 Symposium on Multidetector-row CT in San Francisco.

Yee said the past year has brought substantial progress in VC, and suggested that the exam will be a necessary component for addressing the screening needs of a growing elderly population. And while virtual colonoscopy is making steady progress towards becoming an all-purpose screening tool, Yee cited a number of indications for using it right now. You'll find our exclusive Insider story here.

While you're in the community, you'll also want to examine a report on a just-completed multicenter virtual colonoscopy trial by the U.S. military. In more than 1,200 patients, Dr. Perry Pickhardt and colleagues found that primary 3-D interpretation of virtual colonoscopy data made polyps easier to find. But endoluminal views are no panacea, he said; the study offers important caveats for avoiding pitfalls and false positives.

These are exciting times for virtual colonoscopy providers. To keep up with the latest news in VC and colorectal cancer, be sure to visit the Virtual Colonoscopy Digital Community.
