Siemens adds Definition applications

Siemens Medical Solutions has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance for four applications on its Somatom Definition dual-source CT scanner.

The new dual-energy applications are designed to simplify the diagnosis of diseases of the heart, brain, lungs, and extremity joints, according to the Malvern, PA-based vendor. One application, syngo DE Heart PBV provides color marking of nonperfused parts of the myocardium during cardiology examinations, Siemens said. It also provides for isolated display of the heart, such as without thorax structures.

Another new application, syngo DE Gout, aids physicians in identifying uric acid crystals in the extremities, Siemens said. syngo DE Lung Vessels provides a series of applications to assist in CT examinations of patients with suspected pulmonary embolism, while syngo DE Brain Hemorrhage aids in the distinction between new and old hemorrhages in cerebral bleeding, according to the firm.
