Bone densitometry developer Alara of Hayward, CA, has received two U.S. patents, 6,490,339 and 6,510,197, for its MetriScan peripheral bone densitometer. The product allows physicians to perform in-office bone mineral density testing by scanning patient’s fingers. Using radiographic absorptiometry and low-dose x-rays, the device estimates the relative phalangeal bone density of a patient’s three middle fingers. The system then analyzes the data and provides a T-score of the results.
