Dear Digital X-Ray Insider,

Are misoriented digital x-ray images driving you crazy? Do you wish you had a way to automatically correct images that were upside down or flipped sideways?

Japanese researchers might have a solution for you. They're developing an algorithm that they hope will be able to analyze digital x-rays, recognize which ones aren't oriented properly, and then fix the ones that aren't. Find out how it works in our Insider Exclusive, an article that's available to you as an Insider subscriber before the rest of our members.

If you're of a certain age, you remember when shoe-fitting fluoroscopes were all the rage at shoe shops throughout the U.S. These dubious devices functioned just like medical fluoroscopes, but they were used to help "fit" shoes, especially for children. Not only were the devices a risk to the kids whose feet were being imaged, but they also had a wide radiation leakage field that affected both parents and shoe shop personnel. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently reviewed the history of the devices, and you can read about it by clicking here.

When should pelvic x-rays be discarded in cases of axial rotation? Researchers from Lebanon recently researched this issue, and they provide some guidance in an article you can read by clicking here.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is red hot right now, with researchers exploring its usefulness for a wide variety of imaging modalities and clinical conditions. But can AI contribute anything to radiology's oldest modality? Turns out it can -- find out how by clicking here. After you're done, click here to read about a recent study in which a deep-learning algorithm was used to provide a first read of chest x-rays.

To circle back to fluoroscopy, researchers from the U.S. National Cancer Institute explored the sensitive topic of radiation risk from fluoro procedures, particularly to interventional technologists. They reviewed data on death rates from brain cancer among technologists who performed these procedures, and their findings were somewhat surprising. Learn more by clicking here.
