More than 95,000 PET procedures were performed in the U.S. during the fourth quarter of 2002, up 70% compared with the fourth-quarter 2001 estimate of 55,800 procedures, according to a quarterly study released by market research and consulting firm IMV Medical Information Division.
Oncology procedures generated the highest proportion of PET studies, followed by neurology and cardiology applications, according to the Des Plaines, IL-based company. IMV estimates that over 1,000 facilities in the U.S. performed PET procedures during the fourth quarter of 2002, more than double the number of sites in the fourth quarter of 2000.
Mobile PET services make up the majority of locations performing PET procedures, but fixed PET or PET/CT sites perform the majority of procedures, said IMV vice president Gail Prochaska. About 30% of PET providers used a fixed PET or PET/CT scanner, and imaged 68% of the PET patients, IMV said.
