Philips takes aim at molecular imaging

Philips Medical Systems has expanded its focus on molecular imaging, creating a new molecular imaging business unit. The unit will coordinate the Andover, MA, company’s activities with research institutions and in new product development. Philips made the announcement at this week’s Society for Molecular Imaging meeting in San Francisco.

Philips said that one of the unit’s goals is to speed the transition of discoveries from pre-clinical trials to clinical trials and product development. The company plans to pursue collaborative research programs with academic institutions, contrast agent developers, and pharmaceutical companies, with a focus on discovering new molecular markers, defining specifications of different imaging modalities, and developing new multimodality imaging techniques that can be used in clinical practice.

Specific areas of research include angiogenesis, anti-angiogenesis, apoptosis, and vulnerable plaque. Future applications will include stem cell research and gene therapy, the company said.

The business unit will be led by Peter Luyten, who previously was director of MRI business development at the company.
