PET/CT has been shown to improve diagnostic accuracy and staging in adult oncology, but its role in pediatric oncology is largely unknown. A team of researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center set out to determine the value of the modality in the imaging of pediatric oncology.
They ran a head-to-head comparison of PET/CT against PET imaging alone with 55 consecutive exams and found that combined PET/CT imaging provided additional value for lesion characterization in 88% of the patients.

In other news, we’ll be on the scene at the 2004 European Congress of Radiology in Vienna, as well as the Academy of Molecular Imaging conference in Orlando, FL, this March. Be sure to check in throughout the month to catch the latest breaking news in molecular imaging.
Finally, the online e-book Nuclear Medicine on the Internet, authored and updated each month by Dr. Scott Williams of Advanced Radiology Consultants in Bridgeport, CT, was recently touted as the best text on nuclear medicine for those studying for the American Board of Radiology’s oral boards examinations.
