PET procedure volume reached 650,000 procedures in 2003, up 48% from 2002, according to a recent report by market research firm Bio-Tech Systems of Las Vegas.
Bio-Tech said it expects the growth to continue in 2004, with an estimated 35% increase in procedure volume. FDG sales reached $193.2 million in 2003, up 14% from the $169.4 million generated in 2002, and is expected to reach $521.8 million by 2010.
In 2003, 295 PET scanners were sold in the U.S., and 450 were sold worldwide, according to the company. U.S. sales reached $477.5 million (up 18.6%), while worldwide sales hit $723.5 million (up 32.8%).
The figures reflect a slowdown in U.S. PET orders, as users attempt to utilize existing capacity more efficiently, Bio-Tech Systems said. International sales, however, have grown at rates faster than the U.S., reflecting growing awareness of PET and expanded reimbursement, particularly in Japan.
PET/CT adoption has occurred very rapidly, and in 2003 comprised 79% of total PET billings, according to the firm. This figure should reach 91% in 2004, Bio-Tech Systems said.
Overall, U.S. PET bookings should hit 620 units by 2010, with sales of $1.094 billion, with worldwide sales volume reaching $1.969 billion. The proportion of international (non-U.S.) PET sales to total global sales is expected to grow from 34% in 2003 to at least 45% by 2010, according to the company.
