AMI study shows PET/CT's effect on patient care

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

The results have been streaming in regarding PET/CT’s effectiveness as a clinical tool in oncology. This week is no exception: A study presented at the Academy of Molecular Imaging meeting in Orlando, FL, indicates that PET/CT changed patient management in almost two-thirds of cases involving head and neck tumors.

According to the article in our Molecular Imaging Digital Community by staff writer Jonathan S. Batchelor, researchers at the University of Alabama described their findings in a study of 52 patients with residual or recurrent head and neck tumors following surgery.

PET/CT demonstrated high sensitivity and negative predictive value in restaging patients, and had an impact on patient management in 62% of cases. It also found unsuspected metastases in a number of cases, according to the researchers.
