CMS sets date for expanded MRA coverage

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) said Wednesday that its expansion of coverage for new MR angiography (MRA) applications will go into effect on July 1.

The broader reimbursement plan will cover MRA to evaluate renal arteries in patients without a damaged aorta; MRA for evaluating pelvic arteries in patients without a damaged aorta, and catheter angiography in addition to MRA, based on clinical assessment.

The American College of Radiology of Reston, VA, first made the request for expanded coverage in June 2002. Previously, only MRA for suspected aortic aneurysm or dissection and peripheral vascular disease were approved for Medicare reimbursement.
