Alliance nets NHS contract for MR waiting list

Imaging services provider Alliance Medical has been awarded a five-year contract by the National Health Service (NHS) to tackle England's MRI waiting lists, according to the Oxfordshire, U.K.-based firm.

Alliance will carry out 110,900 examinations in the first year and 131,200 examinations a year in the remaining four years of the contract. A total of 635,000 scans will be undertaken during the lifetime of the contract, which represents a 16% increase in scanning capacity in England, Alliance said.

The service will begin before the end of July, with the program fully operational by the end of 2004. A total of 12 mobile MRI units will be made available to 28 strategic health authorities in the U.K., according to the firm.
