SAN FRANCISCO - You never know what you'll encounter on the streets of San Francisco, and never has this been truer than during the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference. One of the more interesting sights during the January 13-15 meeting was a portable MRI scanner from startup firm Hyperfine Research making the rounds.
Hyperfine's ultracompact point-of-care MRI scanner is designed for brain imaging at the patient's bedside. The system employs a permanent magnet that requires no power or cooling to produce images. What's more, the system requires no special shielding. Hyperfine is awaiting U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance for the system.
