Implant Sciences lands NCI development grant

Implant Sciences has received a grant from the National Cancer Institute for the development of a permanent implant that provides radiation treatment of malignant biliary tumors.

Requiring only one intervention as opposed to other palliative radiotherapy methods, the implant will add a proprietary metal coating onto a commercially available self-expanding stent, according to the Wakefield, MA-based radiation oncology and interventional cardiology firm.

Implant Sciences will receive $100,000 in phase I of the program, with the potential to receive an additional $750,000 for a phase II preclinical investigation, and ultimately clinical trials.
