Intraoperative radiotherapy provider Intraop Medical has reported that principal investigators for the new intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) lung protocol study for Europe have been selected.
Dr. Felipe Calvo, director of radiation oncology at the University Hospital Gregorio Marañón in Madrid, Spain, and Dr. Ignacio Azinovic of Hospital San Jaime in Torrevieja, Spain, have agreed to be principal investigators, according to the Santa Clara, CA-based firm.
The protocol is based on a pilot study of patients treated with IORT at the University of Navarre in Pamplona, Spain. In the study, patients were transported from the surgical theater to the radiation department in the middle of the surgery, and given the IORT treatment using a conventional electron linear accelerator. After the IORT treatment, the patients were transported back to the operating room for completion of the surgery.
The study showed significant improvement in both local control and survival (about a 40% five-year survival rate) compared to conventional treatment for advanced lung cancer (about a 15% five-year survival rate), the company said. Calvo and Azinovic both participated in the pilot study, Intraop said.
