Ultrasound breast imaging technology developer TechniScan said that phase I clinical testing of its breast imaging system has yielded promising results. Used on patients from St. Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City as a secondary screening study to routine screening mammography, the system was able to create high-resolution images showing the speed and absorption of sound in the breast, according to the Salt Lake City-based vendor.
The system also indicated significant separation of benign and cancerous lesions, TechniScan said. The company believes that this information will aid radiologists in distinguishing cancer from benign lesions and other breast structures, and also reduce the need for biopsies.
