AuntMinnie.com Ultrasound Radiology Insider

Dear Ultrasound Insider,

Space might seem to be the last place you'd go for an ultrasound exam. But astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) don't have a lot of other choices. And fortunately, they'll no longer have to do without imaging on the final frontier, thanks to a team from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Doctors and engineers from NASA have devised a remotely guided teleradiology system and imaging template that allows astronauts to perform ultrasound on their colleagues in space. In a talk at the 2004 American Urological Association meeting, NASA's lead flight surgeon, Dr. Jeffrey Jones, discussed the details of the system and the group's experience evaluating the unit.
