DMS launches PC-based US probe

Direct Medical Systems (DMS) of San Ramon, CA, has launched a new B-mode ultrasound probe designed to work directly with a PC -- and without any additional scanning hardware.

The company's Plug and Play Ultrasound Probe System (Ppups) is a complete ultrasound system for B-mode imaging built into a small USB-compatible probe that can be connected directly into a computer with a USB port. The design enables users to capture images on the probe and send them to a PC for processing without the use of analog signals that could degrade the ultrasound signal.

Ppups weighs 7.5 ounces and will be offered in 3.5, 5, 7.5, and 12 MHz options for the most common ultrasound applications. The company plans to sell the probe at a list price of $3,700, and U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance is expected in the fourth quarter.
