3D ultrasound brings workflow savings

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Up to now, most analysis of 3D ultrasound has focused on the technology's clinical benefits with respect to conventional 2D scanning. But new research presented this week indicates that 3D ultrasound offers workflow advantages as well.

That's the news coming from the Leading Edge in Diagnostic Ultrasound conference under way this week in Atlantic City, NJ. Staff writer Erik L. Ridley is on hand to report for our Ultrasound Digital Community.

In a Wednesday presentation, Dr. Beryl Benacerraf of Harvard Medical School in Boston presented her group's research measuring 3D's clinical concordance with 2D ultrasound in fetal scanning. The group also analyzed 3D's impact on departmental workflow, discovering that 3D saved a significant amount of time per exam.

The implications for 3D ultrasound practice could be significant, Dr. Benacerraf said, ranging from increased market share relative to CT and MRI, to enhanced career opportunities and fewer work-related injuries for sonographers. Read all about the group's findings by clicking here.

In another article from the Leading Edge show, researchers from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia looked at the impact of using contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) to delineate thermal lesions from viable tissue, as well as guide and monitor radiofrequency (RF) ablation of the entire prostate.
