GE Healthcare of Chalfont St. Giles, U.K., is using this week's American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) show in San Diego to introduce enhancements to a variety of scanners in its ultrasound product line.
A major AIUM highlight for GE is Sonography-based Automated Volume Count (SonoAVC), a software method for calculating the number and volume of ovarian follicles. SonoAVC is being launched on GE's flagship ob/gyn ultrasound scanner, Voluson E8 Breakthrough 2008.
Physicians using SonoAVC can automatically measure and calculate the number and volume of hypoechoic structures, such as ovarian follicles, in a volume sweep of the scanner's transducer. This is a key step because each fluid-filled follicle contains hormone-producing cells and a maturing ovum (egg), according to GE.
The company believes that SonoAVC can cut as much as 7.6 minutes per patient from a physician's or clinician's time for follicular assessment and reporting.
GE is also using the AIUM show to introduce new abdominal and transvaginal transducers for Voluson E8, with an expanded 195° field-of-view, compared to the previous 120° field-of-view.
For the Voluson 730 Expert scanner, GE is migrating the Sonography-based Volume Computer-Aided Diagnosis (SonoVCAD) software first introduced on Voluson E8 in 2006. SonoVCAD can automate the acquisition of ultrasound images used by physicians to diagnose fetal heart defects.
In other AIUM news, GE is highlighting the Logiq Care Area Series ultrasound scanners introduced at the 2007 RSNA show, as well as the Logiq e Breakthrough 2008 Emergency Medicine Edition.
