Compact-ultrasound developer SonoSite of Bothell, WA, and GE Healthcare of Chalfont St. Giles, U.K., have settled the first of two patent cases between the firms.
GE had filed the lawsuit in May 2007 in a Wisconsin federal court, charging SonoSite with infringing upon six GE patents. SonoSite denied the claim and filed a countersuit of its own.
A judge in the case ruled on July 24 that SonoSite did not infringe upon four of the GE patents, and that another patent was invalid. The judge also ruled that GE did not infringe upon two SonoSite patents. Following the ruling, both parties agreed to dismiss the remaining claims.
One lawsuit remains between the firms, filed by GE in an effort to invalidate SonoSite's U.S. Patent No. 5722412 related to digital ultrasound weighing less than 10 lb. That case is scheduled for trial in June 2009 in the same Wisconsin federal court.
