Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi performs remote robotic prostate procedure

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has collaborated with the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio to perform what it says is the first transcontinental robotic assisted focal therapy procedure for prostate cancer.

The surgery consisted of real-time collaboration between Ruben Olivares, MD, of the U.S. Cleveland Clinic and Waleed A. Hassen, MD, of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. Olivares provided remote support and Hassen conducted the surgery.

The hour-long procedure was a focal therapy treatment that targeted specific sections of the patient's prostate using ultrasound (a method called Focal One high-intensity focused ultrasound [HIFU]), Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi said.
