Siemens installs prototype FFDM at UCLA

Multimodality vendor Siemens Medical Solutions has installed a prototype of its MammoMat NovationDR full-field digital mammography (FFDM) system at the Iris Cantor Center for Breast Imaging at the University of California, Los Angeles. The system uses an amorphous selenium flat-panel detector that permits a direct conversion of x-ray energy to digital data, according to the Malvern, PA-based firm.

MammoMat NovationDR is undergoing a UCLA internal review board-approved clinical study comparing the diagnostic content and image quality of analog and digital images taken at the same radiation exposure level. The system is planned for release by the end of 2003 outside the U.S.; availability inside the U.S. is pending Food and Drug Administration review and approval.
