The European Commission has cleared GE Medical Systems’ proposed acquisition of Finnish firm Instrumentarium, subject to conditions relating to Instrumentarium’s patient-monitoring operations. In order to get European Union regulatory approval, GE has undertaken to sell Instrumentarium’s Spacelabs business and to enter a series of supply agreements with its acquirer. GE will also ensure that its anesthesia equipment, patient monitors, and clinical information systems will interoperate with third-party devices, according to the commission.
As for the deal's impact on the radiology industry, the commission said it analyzed the potential effects of the merger on the mobile C-arm and mammography markets. However, "An in-depth investigation did not reveal any serious competition concerns, in particular in view of the significant position of competitors and other specific features of these markets," the commission said in a release.
