Radiation therapy developer Varian Medical Systems of Palo Alto, CA, has inked a deal with Proxima of Alpharetta, GA, to sell that company's MammoSite brachytherapy device in Europe.
MammoSite uses high-dose-rate brachytherapy to treat breast tissue after a lumpectomy to prevent recurrence of cancer. MammoSite is inserted via a balloon catheter into the cavity created by the removal of a tumor, and a radioactive source is transferred to the treatment site via the catheter.
Varian will sell MammoSite to European cancer centers through its distribution channels.
