Nevada says Summerlin Hospital mammography posed serious health risk

A Nevada state bulletin says mammography practices at Summerlin Hospital Medical Center in Las Vegas posed "a serious risk to human health," according to a report from 8 News Now.

The July 21 technical bulletin from the Radiation Control Program at the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health states that the facility lost its American College of Radiology accreditation in December 2025, after a random image check in October 2025 found significant clinical image quality deficiencies. Positioning problems related to technologist technique were the most critical issues, and reviewers also found that technologists and interpreting physicians failed to identify inadequate images and order repeat exams, according to the bulletin.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) required the hospital to stop performing mammography as of December 11, 2025, and to notify patients who received exams there between October 24, 2023, and December 11, 2025, the news outlet previously reported. Most affected patients will need their mammograms reviewed to determine whether repeat imaging at another facility is necessary, according to a letter sent to patients.

The state is implementing new requirements to strengthen oversight of clinical image quality standards.
