SBI addresses screening myths during Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) is launching a campaign throughout October to counter common misconceptions about breast cancer screening and reinforce its recommendation of annual screening mammography starting at age 40 for women at average risk.

The society is addressing myths related to symptoms, family history, and radiation exposure, noting that 75% of new breast cancer diagnoses occur in women without a family history of the disease and that a digital screening mammogram delivers about 0.5 mSv. This is roughly equal to eight weeks of natural background radiation, according to SBI.

Resources for breast radiologists include the following:

  • Talking points, fact sheets, and patient handouts on the SBI Breast Screening Resources page
  • A social media toolkit using the #40andEmpowered hashtag
  • Three free webinars with continuing medical education credit on October 13, 20, and 27, covering remote breast imaging, missed breast cancers, and high-risk breast lesions
  • An SBI podcast episode on AI implementation and auditing resources
