Radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems reported that it is adding 3-D imaging capabilities to its Acuity x-ray system for dynamic targeting in image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT). The new cone-beam CT capability of the Acuity system, currently awaiting 510(k) clearance by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, will enable radiation oncologists to generate digital images for patient positioning as well as developing, simulating, and verifying treatment plans, according to the Palo Alto, CA-based vendor.
The firm is displaying the technology at the annual meeting of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO), being held this week in Salt Lake City.
