Week in Review: Ultrasound of long COVID | Cinematic rendering | Pandemic stage shift

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

One of the most frightening aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic is the condition commonly known as "long COVID" -- a set of debilitating symptoms that continue to affect individuals long after they have recovered from the acute phase of their illness.

Our top story for the past week indicates how ultrasound provides some insight into the origins of long COVID. Researchers from Spain used ultrasound to pinpoint morphological changes to the vagus nerve that could be signs of longer COVID-related symptoms.

Cinematic rendering

Cinematic rendering -- a data processing technique that creates photorealistic images from medical imaging data -- is one of the more fascinating new technologies in radiology. In a new article in our Advanced Visualization Community, researchers from Switzerland compared cinematic rendering with a mainstay of 3D imaging, volumetric rendering.

University of Zurich researchers produced cinematic-rendered images of CT or conebeam CT scans of the facial skeleton, then had a panel of dentists rate them. The results may surprise you.
