Radiation therapy vendor Varian Medical Systems has introduced a new version of its RapidArc radiotherapy system at this week's American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) meeting in Boston.
The new RapidArc version makes it possible to deliver a volumetric intensity-modulated arc treatment with a single rotation of the treatment machine around the patient, according to the Palo Alto, CA-based vendor. New features include multiple and noncoplanar arc treatments for the targeting of large, irregularly shaped, or awkwardly positioned tumors, Varian said.
In other Varian news, the company said that it will work with Siemens Healthcare of Malvern, PA, to connect Varian's Aria oncology information system and Siemens' syngo Suite for Oncology. While the firms work toward implementing a DICOM worklist-based communication protocol, Siemens will use Varian's 4D Integrated Treatment Console interface to connect its own radiotherapy treatment machines with Aria, Varian said.
