The healthcare division of the Mortsel, Belgium-based Agfa Gevaert Group reported sales of 1.491 billion euros ($1.637 billion, U.S.) in fiscal 2002 (end-December 31, 2002), compared with 2001 numbers of 1.498 billion euros ($1.645 billion). The company believes the strength of the euro is responsible for this small decline, as 43.3% of its sales originate from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) region.
The firm also noted that although revenues of x-ray film slipped, a strong increase was recorded for digital systems. In response to this market trend, Agfa acquired the Canadian company Mitra in the beginning of 2002, and closed its x-ray film manufacturing plant in Brevard, NC, at the end of November.
In December 2002, the Agfa Healthcare division concluded an agreement with Siemens Medical Solutions, according to which it will supply CR systems, dry hardcopy printers, and film processing systems. It also extended its CR agreement with GE Medical Systems for three more years.
