Siemens Medical Solutions’ ultrasound division and 3-D developer TomTec Imaging Systems of Unterschleissheim, Germany, have entered into a strategic alliance. The companies will integrate TomTec’s technology and quantification solutions into the Acuson and Sonoline ultrasound systems with features such as dynamic 3-D visualization of blood flow or 3-D-based calculation of ventricular function, according to the Malvern, PA-based vendor.
As part of the agreement, the two firms will introduce an initiative called the Siemens Cardiology Competence Center. The center will first focus on cardiac applications and will expand to encompass radiology and obstetrical applications in the near future, Siemens said.
The first product scheduled for release from the center will address 3-D and 4-D technology for pre- and post-surgical evaluation of valvular-repair heart surgery. A transesophageal integrated 3-D/4-D solution is being developed that will employ a single console both inside and outside the operating theater, replacing the multiple consoles that are currently required for the same application, according to the developer.
In other news, Siemens and contrast injector firm Medrad of Indianola, PA, have signed an agreement that makes Medrad the global preferred supplier of medical accessories for Siemens. Medrad will be Siemens’ preferred supplier of contrast agent injection systems with CT, MR, and angiography imaging systems. Medrad’s products will be available as part of Siemens product packages, allowing its customers to purchase system accessories for imaging applications from a single source.
