Dear AuntMinnie Member,
Continuing a three-year tradition, AuntMinnie.com is pleased to launch our coverage of the 2004 European Congress of Radiology with an interview with the president of the current meeting, Dr. Helen Carty of the U.K.
In our story by staff writer Eric Barnes, Dr. Carty discusses her experiences as a pediatric radiologist at Royal Liverpool Children’s Hospital, Alder Hey. She believes that the ongoing shortage of radiologists in the U.K. is having a definite impact on pediatric radiology, as fewer pediatric radiologists are being forced to cope with greater workloads.
Compounding the situation is the recent growth in capital equipment acquisition in the U.K. While the new scanners are welcome additions, the greater volume of data they produce is only exacerbating the workload crisis.
The U.K. has made some progress in bringing new radiologists into the system, but Dr. Carty would like to see a more sustained effort -- she believes that the country needs at least twice as many radiologists to be considered adequately staffed.

Speaking of conference coverage, we'll also be providing reports from the American College of Cardiology meeting in New Orleans starting on Sunday. If cardiac imaging gets your heart pumping, make sure to check it out in our Cardiac Imaging Digital Community, at cardiacimaging.auntminnie.com.
