Radiology directors received an average annual base salary of $78,700 in 2003, up from the average of $71,529 reported in 2001, according to a 2003 compensation and benefits survey released by the American Healthcare Radiology Administrators (AHRA).
Assistant director/department managers had an average annual base salary of $64,002 last year, compared to $57,408 reported in the AHRA's 2001 survey. Program directors reported an average salary of $58,398; there were no comparable figures for that position from the Sudbury, MA-based society's 2001 compensation and benefits survey.
Survey respondents also reported the current salaries and hourly rates of personnel employed in their departments. Supervisors/lead technologists had an average hourly rate of $26.43, up from $23.31 two years ago. Diagnostic technologists earned an average hourly rate of $20.07, compared with $17.48 in 2001.
Angiography/specials techs hit an average hourly rate of $23.40, compared with $20.60 in 2001. Mammography techs posted an average hourly rate of $21.54, up from $18.90. Ultrasound techs/sonographers had an average hourly rate of $25.15 in 2003, up from $22.13 a couple of years ago.
The average hourly rate for nuclear medicine technologists climbed from $22.10 in 2001 to reach $26.43 in 2003, according to the survey. MRI techs reached an average hourly rate of $24.28 (up from $21.34 in 2001), while CT techs posted an average hourly rate of $22.71 (compared with $19.94 in the last survey).
In new categories in the 2003 survey, PACS technicians had an average hourly rate of $22.53, while a radiologic technologist with PACS responsibilities received $22.85 an hour. A PACS administrator had an average hourly rate of $29.51 in 2003, according to the survey.
PET technologists had an average hourly rate of $28.46, while PET/CT technologists received $29.17. The average annual merit increase per employee was 3.4% in 2003, according to the AHRA.
In other survey findings, the number of radiology/imaging procedures performed in 2003 by survey respondents reached an average of 78,231 and a median of 52,426, the AHRA said.
