NIBIB issues call for research proposals

The National Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering in Bethesda, MD, has issued a call for new research grant applications in three areas: tissue engineering, drug and gene delivery, and the development of low-cost medical imaging devices.

The imaging-device grant is designed to support the invention and development of low-cost imaging devices for detection, screening, diagnosis, and treatment of human disease and injury, according to the agency. Applications are due by March 14.

Other current imaging-related requests for applications (RFAs) relate to small-animal imaging, cellular and molecular imaging, telehealth, and image-guided interventions. A list of current RFAs is located at the NIBIB’s Web site, at http://www.nibib1.nih.gov.

In other news, the agency’s national advisory council will hold its first meeting January 16-17 at the NIH’s main campus in Bethesda. The NIBIB said the meeting is a milestone in the development of the agency, and is the council’s first official activity.

The 10-member council advises the NIBIB director and other government officials on matters relating to research, training, and health information dissemination within the NIBIB’s area of interest. The council also provides a second level of review for all funding applications for research and training grants, as well as proposed cooperative agreements. More information on the meeting is available here.
