Telerad pioneer discusses Indian side of outsourcing

Dear AuntMinnieIndia Member,

In this issue of the newsletter we bring you an exclusive interview with one of teleradiology's pioneers, Dr Arjun Kalyanpur, from his hub in India. In an extensive discussion, Dr Kalyanpur talks about some of the controversial issues dogging teleradiology and outsourcing today. Is a board-certified radiologist better? Are U.S. radiologists the highest paid? Read the interview to find out.

But although radiology is going global, diseases can continue to retain local quirks, making it tough for radiologists to diagnose them using international criteria. Dr R.K. Garg from King George Medical University, Lucknow, suggests changes to the international diagnostic criteria for neurocysticercosis, adapting them to Indian conditions and challenges.

Not an easy task when you consider that tuberculosis and infectious conditions such as HIV present with similar imaging and clinical findings. India is among the countries with the highest incidence of tuberculosis, and a wrong diagnosis is a real possibility. And as Dr Garg narrates, given the same findings, five radiologists are likely to diagnose tuberculosis and five others cysticercosis! We hope this study makes you suitably cautious and a lot more confident.

And in business news this fortnight, the Diwan Chand Satya Pal Aggarwal Imaging Research Centre (DCA) and Metropolis Pathology Labs have formed a joint venture to tap their combined expertise.
