Imaging's role grows in monitoring radiation therapy

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Medical imaging technologies are finding a growing niche in radiation therapy, both for treatment planning and for monitoring the effectiveness of radiation oncology treatments.

But imaging's success is also raising new issues, according to a recent presentation from last week's American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) meeting. We feature an article on the topic in our Radiation Oncology Digital Community.

One problem is a lack of standards that would enable medical physicists and radiation therapists to track changes in tumor size regardless of the imaging modality used. There can even be frustrating variations within the same modality that arise, for example, from the wide variety of pulse sequences used in MRI.
