PointDx has signed a nonexclusive license agreement to its virtual endoscopy patents to Vital Images, which will allow Vital Images to enhance its CT colonography technology.
Vital Images of Minneapolis utilizes high-speed volume visualization and analysis in its 3-D imaging software for use in disease screening applications, clinical diagnosis, and therapy planning. PointDx, of Winston-Salem, NC, said its technology will allow Vital Images to augment its Vitrea 2 CT virtual colonography software, the company’s flagship product.
Although virtual colonoscopy screening is not yet reimbursable by Medicare and most private insurance carriers, many physicians believe its use will lead to a substantial increase in the number of patients who will be screened for colon cancer. Currently, patient compliance is low due to the discomfort and expense associated with conventional colonoscopy.
