Multislice CT adoption on the upswing

Multislice CT use is increasing rapidly in the U.S., according to a report from consulting firm IMV Medical Information. The report, compiled from a survey of more than 5,500 sites, found that 15% of the fixed CT installations were multislice units. In addition, approximately 50% of the units installed in 2001 were multislice, with half the units slated for purchase through 2003 also having this capability.

The Des Plaines, IL-based group estimated that 39.6 million CT procedures were performed in the U.S. in 2001, representing a 51% increase since 1998. The data indicates an annual increase of approximately 15% per year with higher growth in non-hospital sites. The firm attributes the increase to new sites performing CT procedures as well as an average increase in volume per site.

The report compares current CT trends with four previous surveys conducted by the firm in the 1990s. It is available at www.imvlimited.com.
