Toshiba America Medical Systems said it has donated and installed a refurbished Aquilion 4 CT system at a Kenyan hospital.
Tenwek Hospital in Bomet, Kenya, is a training facility; the Aquilion CT is the area's first CT system, according to Toshiba. Tenwek physicians will use it to perform neurosurgical, thoracic, and orthopedic studies, as well as to provide training for future neurosurgeons.
Toshiba donated the unit through Assist International, an organization that works with corporate partners to address the medical needs of emerging countries, according to Toshiba. Tenwek Hospital serves an area with about 2.5 million people. Before the Aquilion CT system was installed, patients requiring CT scans would have to travel four hours to a hospital in Nakuru.
Toshiba has also donated a spare x-ray tube for the facility to have on hand, the company said.
