Healthcare technology firm Covidien has opened a new research and development facility in Shanghai.
Covidien said it is investing $45 million over three years in its China Technology Center. The R&D facility is equipped with 17 laboratories and contains surgical and simulation suites. It is expected to eventually employ more than 300 people.
The focus of the new facility will be to identify and develop new products for China and emerging markets, and also to develop new medical device technologies. Dong Wu, Covidien's vice president of China R&D, will head the center.
Covidien also operates 10 commercial offices, a manufacturing center, and training facilities for healthcare professionals in China, including the Covidien Clinical Institute, which offers training for healthcare professionals on the safe and effective use of the latest medical devices and procedures.
