Dear CT Insider,
To treat or not to treat? The emergent care of ischemic stroke patients continues to evolve as new studies and technologies come to light. At the International Symposium on Multidetector-Row CT (MDCT 2014) earlier this month, stroke expert Dr. Michael Lev discussed how he makes the decision in 2014, and how CT is helping clinicians make the tough calls.

Another article from MDCT 2014 covers new techniques in pancreatic imaging with perfusion CT, which can visualize tumors that are otherwise invisible. How do they do it at Radboud University Medical Center? Find out here.
Also from our biggest CT meeting of the year, we have a story on how high-resolution breast CT is coming next year -- and how it will perform in terms of radiation dose and cancer detection. MDCT 2014 also provided articles on setting up a lung cancer screening program, the reality of California's new dose reporting law, and the wonders (and limitations) of the photon-counting CT scanner of the future! And we're just getting started.
But topping our CT coverage this week is a new study from Saudi Arabia on infection with the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, with detailed descriptions and some of the first CT images of what it looks like. Click here to learn more.
Another study found evidence of inappropriate imaging referrals in an academic hospital in Saudi Arabia, an occurrence that might seem quite close to home in other parts of the world.
Lung cancer screening remains the 800-lb gorilla in the U.S., at least politically, as screening advocates press their evidence to justify a national program to screen long-term smokers for the disease.
Following an April 30 Medicare advisory panel meeting that gave low marks to the idea of screening eligible Medicare participants, radiologists weighed in on what many viewed as an arrogant and dismissive panel that was against the idea of screening in the first place. Look for commentary from Dr. Ella Kazerooni and Dr. Denise Aberle here.
