Cardiovascular software developer HeartFlow announced that Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Blue Shield of California, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama have issued coverage for the company's fractional flow reserve (FFR) software, HeartFlow FFR-CT Analysis.
The three insurers provide health insurance for 44 million people, HeartFlow said. Each determined that the use of HeartFlow's FFR-CT technology following a coronary CT angiogram may be considered medically necessary for patients with stable chest pain, the company said.
HeartFlow FFR-CT Analysis creates a 3D model of a patient's arteries. Computer algorithms then simulate blood flow to help clinicians assess the effect of blocked arteries, according to the firm.
