VIENNA - A new digital upright biopsy system, called Affirm, was among the new product launches at this week's European Congress of Radiology (ECR) meeting in Vienna by women's imaging vendor Hologic of Bedford, MA.
Affirm can be mounted on the company's Selenia Dimensions full-field digital mammography (FFDM) system, and was designed to provide an easy transition from digital mammography to stereotactic biopsy on the unit. Affirm uses the digital image receptor on the Selenia Dimensions system and the same targeting mechanism used on the company's MultiCare Platinum prone biopsy table. It also can be used with Hologic's Eviva vacuum-assisted breast biopsy device.
Another introduction for ECR was a new patient comfort package for MultiCare Platinum. The upgrade includes features designed to make prone biopsies more comfortable for patients and easier for physicians.
Also new was Advanced Body Composition software for the Discovery bone densitometer. The application combines rapid acquisition of the total body with advanced reporting and the new U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) reference data. The company believes that the color display of fat and lean distribution combined with a new trending report are valuable tools for clinicians.
Hologic also highlighted digital tomosynthesis applications available on Selenia Dimensions in Europe, where a 2D/3D option has been available for more than a year. Dimensions is only available as a 2D system in the U.S. as the company awaits U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval.
In image review, the company demonstrated the use of a third multimodality monitor with its SecureView breast workstation that enables the review of images from other modalities next to mammography images.
Another highlight was the addition of multimodality viewing options with the company's MR-CADworks package for breast MRI.
