Results of multicenter clinical research presented at the International Symposium on Endovascular Therapy in Miami this week suggest that treatment of peripheral vascular disease (PVD) may be improved by use of a flexible stent.
Vascular device manufacturer IntraTherapeutics of St. Paul, MN, funded the study, which compared PVD treatment by angioplasty with use of the company’s flexible stent, the IntraCoil. According to Dr. Kenneth Rosenfield, a study author, "for short blockages where the balloon result is suboptimal, this stent can restore normal flow to the leg."
The IntraCoil stent is FDA-approved to treat obstructions in the bronchi, and is under expedited review by the agency for use in PVD treatment.
