The StatLock device outperformed standard sutures for securing peripherally inserted central catheters and reducing infections, according to manufacturer Venetec International of San Antonio, TX.
Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia tested StatLock in a 170-patient study, and found that the device significantly reduced bloodstream injections and eliminated securement-related needle-stick injuries to healthcare workers. They presented their results at the Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology (SCVIR) meeting earlier this month.
They study showed that StatLock decreased total complications by approximately one-third when compared with suture, reduced unplanned catheter removals by 43%, and reduced the number of catheter dislodgments and restarts.
