SenoRx lands patent for partial-breast radiation balloon

Breast cancer interventional device company SenoRx has been granted new patents covering partial-breast radiation balloon technology by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The new patents cover products for short-term breast radiation balloon products currently in development at the Aliso Viejo, CA-based company. These products are used to irradiate breast tissue surrounding the cavity created following lumpectomy.

The company said that its product is designed with vacuum ports on the distal and proximal ends of the balloon, which may give physicians the ability to use suction to remove cavity fluid and air and to conform tissue to the balloon's exterior surface while delivering radiation. The system is designed for compatibility with radiation generated from either isotope or x-ray sources, SenoRx said.
